Senior Matt Goldsberry was selected to the Indianapolis Star All-City team. Matt was selected for his play as a midfielder. Matt ended his senior season with six goals and two assists. Senior Nick Sato was selected as a honorable mention player. Nick led the defense this past year for Heritage. Coach Nelson is very proud of both boys and is looking forward to watching them play college soccer next year.

East vs. West All-Star Game

On November 7th Matt Goldsbery and Nick Sato represented Heritage in the 2a East vs. West All-Star game held at Crawfordsville High School. Their East team lost 4-2 but the tandem combined to score both goals for their team. It was a great night for Heritage soccer and hopefully Matt and Nick started a tradition of having Heritage players selected to play in this all-star game.

Eagles ousted in City Tournament

Heritage and Chatard faced off in second round action of the city tournament Monday evening. Powerful winds kept the game interesting and both teams played very well in the tough conditions. Senior Matt Goldsberry scored for Heritage midway through the first half. The Eagles were able to hold onto the lead and went into halftime up 1-0. The second half was very competitive and things were looking good for Heritage until Chatard was awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Jon Harman came up huge and saved the penalty kick. Unfortunately the referee called a fault and allowed Chatard to have kick again. The Trojans scored to tie the game on the second chance. The boys continued to play well and Chatard was able to punch through the go ahead goal with about 15 minutes to go in the game. The Eagles went with three forwards in hopes of getting the tying goal but Chatard was able to put in another goal with about eight minutes to go to seal the win.

Coach Nelson was very pleased with the effort of the guys. He was impressed by the amount of challenges that they won through out the game. The Eagles look to rebound from this game and gear up for a great game against Mt. Vernon on Thursday.

The Eagles advanced to the second round of the City Tournament by beating Arsenal Tech 5-2. After a scoreless first half, the Eagles were finally able to score on a header by junior Connor Richards. Junior Brad Giannini would score a few minutes later to put Heritage up 2-0. The Titans would score off of the ensuing kick-off to bring the game to 2-1. The game was very tense for the next ten minutes as freshman goalie Jon Harman had to make big saves to preserve the lead. Senior Matt Goldsberry brought relief to the Eagles by scoring two goals to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Evan Williams would tally the last goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles will have a rematch against Bishop Chatard in the second round which is to be played on Monday, September 28th. The winner of the game will face the #1 seed Cathedral High School.

Elusive Win

The Eagles continue to search for a win this season. The team fell 4-2 against Chatard and 10-0 against powerhouse Hamilton Southeastern last week. While the boys continue to work hard, injuries have plagued the varsity team. Senior goalie Jeff Kistler had his season come to an end with a wrist injury. The Eagles have also been playing with out seniors Drew Calabro and Lewis Kim due to their injuries. Coach Nelson has been pleased with the freshmen that have stepped in for the seniors and knows this experience will help the team for next year.

The Eagles resume to action this week against rival Park Tudor Tuesday and then will participate in the City Tournament on Saturday. Go Eagles!

Heritage falls just short

Heritage found itself in a hole down 2-0 against Greenfield-Central at halftime on Saturday but the boys came out swinging in the second half. The Eagles scored early in the second half to cut the lead to 2-1 from a goal by junior Daniel Shake. The Eagles kept pushing toward the tying goal but Greenfield was able able to score to make it 3-1. Sophomore Evan Williams brought the game back to within a goal with a left footed shot that beat Greenfield's goalie. The boys had a great offensive push for the last five minutes of the game but were not able to find the back of the net. The loss drop Heritage to 0-9 on the season.

Hoosier Cup Results

The Eagles came away from Bloomington with out a win. The boys ran up against a great team in Columbus North and lost 6-0. Columbus had too much firepower for the boys to handle. In the second game against Merrillville, the Eagles came out strong and had some early chances to score. Unfortunately the Pirates were able to score on their first shot of the game which took some of the momentum away from they boys. Heritage was able to control a good portion of the game but Merrillville kept finding ways to score to go up 3-0. Sophomore Evan Williams finally broke through and scored in the second half from an assist from Lewis Kim. The final score was 3-1. In the final game, the Eagles lost a close 2-0 game to Ryle High School. The eagles had several opportunites to score but could not find the back of the net.

Even though the team did not come away with a win, Coach Nelson was able to see progress. The Eagles have had a very tough start to the year but are still aiming to do well in the city tournament as well as in sectional play. The Eagles will travel to Brebeuf on September 11th for their next game.

Heritage falls to Warren Central

The eagles fell behind early before losing 7-0. Warren Central scored five minutes into the game off of a corner kick that Heritage was unable to safely clear. Warren would tack on another goal a few minutes later which ended up turning the tide of the game into their favor. The eagles continued to compete but Warren simply had too much depth and fire power. The boys will use the weekend to rest up and are aiming to get their first win when they host Covenant Christian on Tuesday, August 25th.

The boys fell 2-1 against Plainfield High School. Plainfield was a pre-season honorable mention team and the eagles gave them all they could handle. Plainfield scored ten minutes into the game off of a header. The eagles continued to play hard and tied the game on a goal from senior Matt Goldsberry. The game was 1-1 at halftime. Both sides had chances to take the lead in the second half and Plainfield was able to break through for the game winning goal with three minutes to go in the game. Information

Training sessions have been going well. We still have lots of room for growth but strides are being made in the right direction. Teams were made yesterday but they are not set in stone. The players heard on numerous occasions that things could change. A specific example was given of a player on last years team that started on the junior varsity and ended up starting and playing in some varsity games.

Important Dates

*The varsity breakfast will be held at the Sato's home after the morning training session on August 7th. This should last about two hours. This has been a tradition for many years at Heritage and is for varsity players only.

*Players will receive their player package form tomorrow. Once I receive the completed form, I will issue the player pack to the player.

*I will have extra player packages this year. Once I know for sure how many extra packs I will have, I will send out information and directions on purchasing the items. All of the proceeds from the extra items will go into the soccer fund. If there is demand for more items than I have, I will place an order through the booster club for more apparel.

*There will be a meeting for parents of fall sport athletes on Tuesday, August 11th at 6pm in the high school cafeteria. I will meet with soccer parents for about twenty minutes at this meeting. It is important for all parents to be in attendance.

*Team pictures will be on Wednesday, August 12th.

*The season kick-off party will be held Saturday, August 15th from 8pm to 10pm at the Sato's home. Please contact me if you need directions. Freshmen families should bring a side dish, sophomores and juniors should bring drinks, and senior families should bring a dessert.

As always, please feel to contact me if there are any questions.

Parent Information

Please take a moment and click on the link below to learn about an upcoming meeting for parents of incoming freshmen and for information concerning physicals. Every player will need a physical to play in the fall and this is a great opportunity to get it done well before the season begins. Heritage also benefits as some of the money goes back to the school.

I just wanted to give some clarity to the 4th of July moratorium week. We will not practice June 28th through July 4th. We will resume training on July 6th.

Also, May 7th will be the last day for off-season lifting. I want the students to focus on finishing the school year on a solid note with final exams and projects looming.

Summer Training

Our summer schedule will begin on June 15th. We will train on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00am to 10:30am on the turf field. We will not train the week of the 4th of July and the week of July 27th. We have been accepted to play in two summer tournaments. The first will be on June 20th at Mt. Vernon. This is a jamboree against very good competition. We will be making a return visit to Indiana Wesleyan University on July 25th for our second tournament. More information is to follow concerning the tournaments.

My goal this summer is to have a great turn out for the tournaments. Those two dates are the most important dates of the summer. While attendance of summer training is optional, our program will be best served by having players come to as many training sessions as possible.

If there are any questions, please let me know. I can be reached at 317-501-7605 or at landon.nelson@heritagechristian.net

Fresh off of our laser tag experience, the coaching staff is looking forward to a relaxing outing that doesn't wear them out! The guys had a lot of fun shooting each other and the coaches this past Saturday. Our next outing will be at Connor Richards' house. This is a free event and the Richards' have also offered to provide snacks for the guys. This will be a great evening consisting of playing pool, ping pong, video games, and just hanging out. Please let Coach Nelson know by March 18th if your son is able to attend so that the Richards can plan accordingly. I look forward to seeing all of the guys on the 21st!

Sportsmanship Award

Our school was presented with a prestigious award on February 27th during halftime of the boys varsity basketball game. Out of 400 plus IHSAA high schools in Indiana, Heritage was one of only 92 schools that received a sportsmanship banner for the 2007-2008 school year. This reflects the character and integrity of our school, athletic department, and each individual team. Getting this award shows that Heritage is well respected through out the state for the way that it wins and for its conduct on field, court, diamond, etc.

Pass Workouts

I just received word from our Athletic Director that we are now able to start P.A.S.S. Mr. Riddick made an arrangement with Jaime to have Heritage athletes come to her facility for training two times a week. The times are Tuesdays at 7:30pm and Fridays at 3:30pm. Each session should last one hour. Please keep in mind that these sessions are optional. The Athletic Department covers the cost of two training sessions per week. This is a nice opportunity for players wanting some additional work outs.

Parents not familar with P.A.S.S. are welcome to contact Jaime or Coach Nelson to find out about the program. Heritage is fortunate to have P.A.S.S. and the program helps our athletes gain an advantage in speed and quickness.

Lifting Update

I am pleased with the turn out. We are averaging fifteen players at each session. The boys are working hard and do a very nice job of encouraging each other. Captains Graham Gardner and Nick Sato are setting a great example for the younger guys to follow.

Cosmic Bowling Outing

We had a great turnout for cosmic bowling this past Saturday night. Sixteen players, two coaches, and a wife turned out to bowl. Some highlights of the night were:

1. Watching the guys try to see how many times the ball could hit the bumpers before hitting the pins.

2. Watching bowling balls go through legs, behind backs, over heads, and being kicked down the lanes.

3. Everyone on Coach Nelson's lane having too much fun to realize that they got beat by Coach Nelson's wife. (She was a ringer!! Sarah has her own ball and shoes)

4. Listening to the guys cheer for Sarah to bowl gutters and to miss pins so that she wouldn't beat them again.

5. Watching the interaction between the guys as they had good clean fun.

This was a great start to our outings and the coaching staff hopes to see this trend continue.
